Habitech, the Energy and Environment Cluster

Habitech, the Energy and Environment Cluster promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento and recognized by the Ministry of Universities and Research, came about as a result of cooperation between the University, research laboratories, private companies and local institutions, with the objective of creating in Trentino specialized production chains in the fields of sustainable building, renewable energy sources and intelligent territorial management technology.

Habitech is a system initiative, born in a social and institutional context which pays great attention to the new environmental challenges. Habitech promotes a new production model based on the synergy between various parties – companies, research centres, institutions – sharing a common purpose: to encourage the development and spread of clean tech and to transform awareness and attention to environmental protection into an opportunity.

The Trentino Technology Cluster Consortium is the operational arm of Habitech, the Energy and Environment Cluster. It is managed by a board of directors elected by the member companies, and its objective is to translate the Habitech projects into concrete reality by promoting specific business initiatives. Approximately 184 members, representing over 300 companies, research bodies and public agencies, have already joined this project, which utilizes Trentino’s environmental vocation to create a pole of excellence for sustainable technology which private and public bodies may approach for help in finding solutions to technological and management problems.

Febrary 2008 saw the launch of the Green Building Council Italia (GBC Italia), a non-profit association promoted by Trentino Sviluppo and the Trentino Technology Cluster Consortium, which is bringing profound innovation to the Italian building market thanks to the introduction of the standards laid down by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). An association of companies, associated professional studios, public authorities and universities which intend to foster the development of sustainable building in conjunction with the international community. The points of reference are the international experience of the USGBC (United States Green Building Council) and the LEED classification system
